ANGER WORK
I have been
working with anger and training others to work with anger
for twenty years. Ever since I discovered that I was not the calm (and
slightly bland) chilled-out guy I thought I was I have been fascinated
by
the ways that anger works in people. At its root, I know that anger is
a
reaction against the perception that something is threatening me
or threatening someone or something important to me.
Sometimes this perception is accurate, sometimes not. Then there
is the question of what to do with that anger. I work with the
perception and/or with the choices about what to do with the anger.
People with
serious anger
problems (violence) need to learn to make
better choices first. Five to ten sessions usually are enough
to bring violent behaviour patterns under control.
But the deeper, more permanent work is about learning how to know
whether the perception of threat is really valid or is a leftover
habit from the past. This work can take longer but brings
understanding of how we got to be angry people, and acceptance of
ourselves as we really are.
I love anger really. It is a part of the human kit and I believe that
without it, we would have been eaten by whatever was bigger than
we were and hungry. But over two thousand years ago Aristotle wrote
that while anybody can be angry, to be angry with the right person,
to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose is a rare
thing indeed. Today the situation is the same. We have anger and
it is our responsibility to learn how to live with it.
If you want
to work with me on your anger, or you want to talk to me
about
your (or somebody else's anger) . I will get back to you as soon
as I can.
